  1. Switzerland is a federation of 23 Cantons, three of which in 1291
  2. created a defensive league that were later joined by the other
  3. districts.  In 1648 the Swiss confederation gained independence
  4. from the Holy Roman Empire and in 1848 the Cantons were joined in
  5. a federal constitution.  Switzerland has maintained armed
  6. neutrality since 1815 and has not been involved in a foreign war
  7. since 1515.  Switzerland is a leader in world banking.  The
  8. stability of the Swiss Franc has brought much foreign investment. 
  9. 20% of the Swiss work force is foreign.                    @
